How to prevent allergies in monsoon?

If you find yourself catching colds or experiencing allergies frequently, there are several expert-suggested steps you can take to help strengthen your immune system and reduce your symptoms. Here are ways to prevent allergies in rainy season.

1. Practise good hygiene

“Wash your hands frequently using soap and water or continue applying an alcohol-based sanitiser to curb the spread of germs. Refrain from touching your face, especially your mouth, eyes, or nose,” suggests the expert. Germs enter our body through our sense organs, and if we touch them with our hands, which are mostly hotbeds of germs, we tend to catch an allergy very soon.

2. Boost your immunity

Allergies are mostly an outcome of weak immunity. You can work on strengthening your immunity by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and consuming a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep to support your immune system.

3. Manage stress

“Chronic stress stimulates the release of cortisol, the stress hormone, in our body that attacks our immune system and weakens it. You must engage in stress-reducing activities such as deep breathing, yoga, or meditation or even indulge in hobbies you enjoy to beat the stress,” says the expert.

5. Keep your surroundings clean

“You must clean the areas in your proximity and you must disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and electronic devices. This helps reduce the risk of viral or bacterial contamination,” says the expert.

6. Consider allergy medications

Over-the-counter antihistamines or nasal sprays can be a temporary saviour from irritable allergy symptoms. Consult with a healthcare professional or allergist to determine the most appropriate medication for your condition.

7. Stay away from sick individuals and get vaccinated

Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick, especially if they have respiratory symptoms like coughing or sneezing. Also, keep up to date with vaccinations, including the flu vaccine. Vaccines help reduce the severity of your symptoms if you do fall sick.
