What is cellulite?

Cellulite refers to dimpled, lumpy appearance of the skin, commonly found on the thighs, buttocks, and hips. It is a condition that affects both men and women, but it is more prevalent in women. Cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin, causing the skin to appear uneven and textured. Although the precise causes of cellulite remain somewhat elusive, there are several factors that contribute to its formation and appearance.

Hormonal changes, genetic predisposition, poor circulation, and a sedentary lifestyle can all play a role. Additionally, diet, excessive body fat, and ageing may contribute to the appearance of cellulite. While it is not a serious medical condition, cellulite is something people are not fond of and wish to get rid of it.

How to get rid of cellulite?

As Health Shots reached out to Dr Sudheendra Udbalker, Consultant, Dermatology, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta, Bengaluru,
he suggested 6 ways by which one can get rid of cellulite. Let’s take a look at them natural ways to get of cellulite.

1. Engage in regular exercise

Regular physical activity not only promotes overall well-being but can also help diminish the appearance of cellulite. Dr Udbalker suggests that aerobic exercises such as running, swimming, and biking aid in fat burning and enhance circulation, which can reduce the prominence of cellulite. Additionally, incorporating strength training exercises helps tone your muscles, leading to firmer-looking skin.

2. Try massage therapy

Massaging the affected areas can enhance blood circulation and alleviate the appearance of cellulite. Various massage techniques, such as kneading, rolling, and tapping, can be employed to target problem areas. “Regularly incorporating self-massage or seeking professional help can improve blood flow and reduce the dimpled appearance of the skin,” says Dr Udbalker.

3. Maintain a healthy diet

A well-balanced diet plays a crucial role in reducing cellulite. Focus on consuming foods that are low in calories and fat while being rich in fibre, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These nutrient-dense foods help keep you feeling satiated and promote general health. On the other hand, it is advisable to limit your intake of processed foods, sugary beverages, and excessive alcohol, as they can exacerbate the appearance of cellulite.

4. Utilise compression stockings

Wearing compression stockings during the day or night can enhance blood flow and help minimise the appearance of cellulite. These specialised stockings provide gentle pressure, improving circulation and reducing fluid retention. They can be particularly effective when worn during physical activity or while standing for extended periods.

5. Adopt healthy lifestyle habits

Quitting smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation can contribute to reducing the visibility of cellulite. Smoking damages collagen and elastin – two proteins vital for skin strength and elasticity. Whereas, excessive alcohol consumption can lead to weight gain, intensifying the prominence of cellulite. By eliminating these harmful habits, you can support your skin’s natural elasticity and overall health.

6. Hydrate adequately

Drinking sufficient water aids in flushing toxins out of your body and can lead to an improvement in your skin’s overall appearance. Proper hydration supports healthy skin by maintaining its elasticity and promoting a smoother texture. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your body hydrated and aid in minimising cellulite, says Dr Udbalker.
