In the quest for fuller and plumper lips, people often turn to unconventional methods and DIY hacks. One such viral trend involves rubbing chili or red pepper on the lips to achieve a temporary plumping effect. Girls have been rubbing red peppers on their lips to get that one perfect pouty-lips selfie. However, dermatologists and experts are sounding the alarm, emphasizing the potential dangers associated with this popular but hazardous practice. Let us know why you should never use red pepper for plump lips, shedding light on the risks and what are the safer alternatives.

New Delhi-based dermatologist and social media influencer Dr Nivedita Dadu recently shared an Instagram reel to warn against using red pepper on the lips as it can lead to severe allergies and skin reactions.

It is no secret that fuller lips are often considered aesthetically pleasing and desirable. People have resorted to various methods, ranging from over-the-counter lip plumpers to lip injections, to achieve this look. However, the lip plump hack involving red pepper is not only ineffective in the long run but also poses significant health risks.

Use of red pepper for fuller lips

The chili being used for this bigger lips hack is Cayenne red pepper (a moderately spicy pepper). The active component in this red pepper responsible for its spicy sensation is capsaicin. Dr Dadu explains that when applied to the lips, capsaicin triggers a process called vasodilation, which causes an increase in blood flow to the area. This temporary increase in blood circulation gives the illusion of plumper lips, as they appear redder and slightly fuller. However, this effect is short-lived and can be accompanied by adverse consequences.

Reasons why you should never use red pepper for plump lips

1. Allergic reactions

Red pepper is a potent irritant and allergen. According to Dr Dadu, applying it directly to the delicate skin of the lips can cause severe allergic reactions, including redness, swelling, itching, and even blistering. People with pre-existing allergies or sensitive skin are particularly vulnerable to these adverse effects.

2. Skin irritation

The skin on the lips is sensitive and susceptible to damage. Rubbing red pepper on the lips can lead to inflammation, irritation, and dryness, potentially exacerbating existing lip conditions such as chapped or cracked lips

3. Potential for Infection

The act of applying red pepper on the lips involves physical manipulation and contact with the fingers, which may carry bacteria or other pathogens. Any open cuts or sores on the lips could become infected, leading to further complications.

4. Eye Irritation

Accidental contact with the eyes while handling red pepper can cause significant discomfort, redness, and irritation. Given the proximity of the lips to the eyes, the risk of inadvertently transferring the irritant is high.

Hacks like applying natural oils on lips or exfoliating them with a sugar scrub can work wonders for your lips too.

While the idea to achieve plump lips through a simple hack may seem enticing, it is crucial to prioritize your health and well-being. The risks involved outweigh the short-lived benefits, making rubbing of red pepper for plump lips an unhealthy and unsafe practice. Remember, beauty trends may come and go, but your safety and long-term well-being should always remain a priority.
