Ahmedabad: The Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad (city) ordered Oriental Insurance Co to pay unjustifiably deducted amounts to a couple, who fell ill with Covid-19 and were treated in home isolation.

The case involves Kinnari and Kiran Choksi, residents of Bhulabhai Park, who had obtained a Rs 5 lakh “Corona Kavach Policy”. When they contracted the disease in March 2021, they got treatment from a private hospital while quarantined at home as there were no beds in hospitals. They paid Rs 1.38 lakh for Kiran’s treatment and Rs 1.31 lakh for Kinnari’s. When they sought reimbursement, the insurer paid them Rs 25,000 each, stating that the hospital had charged higher than hospitalization charges and more than the Covid package.

The couple sued the insurer through advocate Mukesh Parikh of Consumer Protection and Action Committee. The commission said there was no reason to deduct the money and ordered the insurer to pay Rs 1.13 lakh and Rs 1.06 lakh to Kiran and Kinnari, respectively. The company was also asked to pay Rs 8,000 extra to each as compensation.
